THEO HUG

Biography

By: Kim Dubé, Ontario

Theo was born with horses, comes from a family who has always had horses and has always wanted to be a “HorseMan”.
Since the founding of Grison Farm ( a family enterprise) in 1989 Theo has gone from employer, to horse trainer, to property manager, and finally sole proprietor in 2001.
Today.
The good reputation of Grison Farm is known across the Haflinger world.
At the age of 18, Theo became involved with the imports and exports of Haflingers Horses. World renown Haflinger expert Her. Otto Schweisgut introduced Theo to the breed in 1990. Theo spent a lot of time in the Austrian Alps examining and learning about the Haflinger breed from Her. Otto Schweisgut. That same year, Theo ( with father Christian Hug) bought 8 Haflingers foals from official Fohlenhof sale in Austria. Under the guidance of Her.Otto Schweisgut.
It is also from Her.Otto Schweisgut. That Theo and Grison Farm obtained their fabulous stallion Adanac who assists with Grison’s excellent reputation. Even today, Her.Otto Schweisgut. Would tell you that he would never have sold Adanac to anyone else, despite many offers from other breeders.
Theo returned the favour to Her. Otto Schweisgut. By providing a selection of high quality mares for Adanac’s future foals. A long-term process since Theo personally chooses the mares to bred with Adanac. Quality before quantity is a long-term effort Quality is never an accident, it represents the wise choice of many alternatives
Today you will find no one who puts more energy/work/pleasure/passion to advertise and promote the breed and continue to “Populate” Canada and the United States with Haflingers every year.

It is this honest and direct approach, that gives Theo such a good reputation in the world of the Haflinger Horse.

Theo is a big fan of the original Tiroler Haflinger Horse and he loves to visit Austria and Fohlenhof Ebbs in Tirol.

Trough the years and annual visits to Austria, Theo opened a new stream of contacts that permitted Him to quickly become an expert on the breed, despite his young age.

It’s not surprising that today many breeders and future breeders consult Theo before purchasing a Haflinger.

Fluent in 3 languages, Theo is often consulted for exportation and exportation, since 1990 Theo has exported/exported over 200 Haflingers.

In the U.S. Theo has a good line of Haflinger contacts especially in Ohio and Pennsylvania, along with a very honest relationship with the Amish community, who share Theo’s passion of the Haflinger horse.

Chantale is a country girl who grew up on the family farm in the region of Lotbiniere.
After having spent more than 3 years at Grison Farm, she has become Theo's "Right Hand Man", as well as being responsible for the overall management of Camp Grison.
Today, she works full-time at Camp Grison in order to live out her childhood dream, which is quite enviable. Living with horses is not so much a job, but more so a unique opportunity.
Being passionate about horses since a very young age, she transmits this love through her students since she is also a classical horseback riding instructor herself. In addition to that, she is an experienced rider. She has won numerous jumping competitions riding Grison's A Gold Star.
Chantale is very patient with her horses, and not only has she taken on tasks such as artificial insemination, but she is responsible for the overall management of the herd (vaccines, deworming, and nutrition).
She is also responsible for all the trainees that regularly visit from Europe.
During trips abroad, Theo can rest assured knowing that Chantale is familiar with the process and what is required for a smooth operation. She is a woman who is capable of doing many things, from the kitchen of the summer camp, to working in the stables and even knowing how to drive a tractor.
